Under provision 457-A:8 of the New Hampshire bill, civil unions from states other than New Hampshire, will be recognized as civil unions in New Hampshire, but in states where civil unions are not recognized, a New Hampshire civil union will not be recognized.
As with marriages, most civil unions can be dissolved under New Hampshire code RSA 458.
Since same-sex unions are not recognized on the federal level, couples cannot file joint federal tax returns or enjoy other federal law benefits.
A recent bill in the NH legislature proposing allowing same sex couples to adopt was recently tabled. Thus, same-sex couples do not have the same rights as heterosexual couples for adoption.
